2020 Charlie's Vineyard Reserve Estate Pinot Noir

Charlie's vineyard is a limited production Estate reserve selection from our limestone rich vineyard on the East side of Cayuga Lake. Grapes are sustainably farmed with no herbicides or insecticides. The vineyard is located in the central elevation on our site, and features loamy soils over limestone.  The vineyard is named in honor of Charlie Kuchenbrod, Susan's father, in gratitude for his ongoing commitment of time, energy, and love during his many years on the Heart & Hands harvest team.

Black cherries, exotic spices and minerality on the nose. The deep cherries continue on the palate along with hints of pomegranate and ripe plums, followed by a long, satisfying finish with medium tannins.

Charlie's Vineyard is centrally located on the Estate with a moderate slope. The vineyard's rich Ontario silt loam soils provide higher fertility to nurture the vines. The vines and soil overlay the prominent Onondaga limestone bedrock that provides the plants with optimal access to nutrients and allows Pinot Noir to flourish. Out of love and respect for the environment, the vineyard is sustainably farmed forgoing the use of insecticides or herbicides. The name honors Charlie Kuchenbrod, Susan's father, in gratitude for the ongoing commitment of his time, energy, and love during his years on our harvest team.
We handpicked the grapes into small 30-pound picking lugs. We normally use an optical sorter to select only the best fruit, but we elected not to do so because the fruit was in perfect condition. We fermented each vineyard section separately in several one-ton bins, and within each vineyard section, we isolated the Pinot Noir clones when feasible. After fermentation, we pressed and transferred the wine into neutral French oak barrels for 14 months of aging. We consider this to be the most exceptional Pinot Noir we have produced to date.
